The drive from Balingup to Bridgetown via Greenbushes and
Maranup
Ford,
then return to Balingup is a 65km round trip.
Begin at the corner of South Western Highway and Brockman Street,
Balingup. Travel south along the South Western Highway.
You will pass pine plantations, farmland and some native forest.
10km from Balingup on the right hand side you will see the road into Greenbushes. Greenbushes has operated as a mining town since 1888. It is worth stopping for a view over the Sons of Gwalia main pit from the Mine Lookout, and a visit to the eco-cultural Discovery Centre.
Leave Greenbushes and travel along the Maranup Ford Road. On this road you will cross a bridge that replaced the original ford - there is a steep hill down to the bridge. Kandalee Gardens is located 9km from Greenbushes. The gardens cover nearly four hectares and contain exotic deciduous trees, native flora and many flowers. The garden attracts a wide variety of birdlife and is well worth a visit to have a picnic, wander around or canoe on the river. It is best if possible to call ahead to arrange a visit.
Continue along the Maranup Ford Road until it meets the Brockman Highway. Turn left and drive into Bridgetown. Stroll along Bridgetown's main street, feed the ducks on the Blackwood River or visit "The Cidery" for lunch and a taste of the cider made on the premises. If you plan ahead and book you can go horse riding while in Bridgetown.
Return to Balingup by driving north along the South Western Highway.
